Goals:
Communicate the importance
of and need for a universal access policy to the university community.
Create, disseminate and implement a campus policy for universal access.
Develop mechanisms (e.g., training, web page templates, style sheets, etc.)
to support implementation of the policy.

Audience:
The audience for
our activities is all members of the university community — faculty,
staff, students, administrators, and patrons. Each strategy we undertake
will identify the audience for that specific activity.

Strategies:
1) Sponsor a series
of projects and events to raise awareness on campus and provide training.
Ideas identified:
a. Provide grants to faculty to learn about web accessibility & retrofit
their course-related web sites.
b. Sponsor a campus listserv for disseminating information.
c. Sponsor a Universal Access web site on the University web site.
d. Sponsor a Brown Bag series on Universal Access issues: Why is universal
design important?
e. Disseminate templates for web pages with built-in accessibility.
f. Sponsor a showcase of accessible web pages.
g. Provide a library of web page style sheets.
h. Provide a searchable knowledge base of documentation.
i. Sponsor training opportunities (Greg Konosp, UWisc-Madison; Macromedia
Web Accessibility Seminar; EASI’s Online Courses)

2) Address issues of University policy on universal access.
a. Demonstrate to the university community the need for and importance of
universal access.
i. Sponsor a demonstration in conjunction with Martin Luther King Day campus
events.
ii. Meet with University business administrators. (Admissions, Registrar’s
Office) to demonstrate the need for universal access.
b. Describe the University’s web presence — number of web pages
and sites, the types of pages (instructional, administrative, informational) — and
the impact the policy will have on these pages.
c. Shepherd the process of policy formation and implementation:
i. Draft policy.
ii. Disseminate.
iii. Implement.
iv. Compliance.
d. Provide information on the cost of retrofitting web sites.
i. Sponsor one
or more campus pilot projects to assess the cost of retrofitting
a web site to meet policy standards.
ii. Locate and share data from other organizations around the nation.
e. Evaluate the impact of the policy and the group’s efforts on campus.
