on universal access techniques and standards.

College of Law; David Dawson, Director, Iowa Center for Assistive Technology
and Educational Resources (ICATER).

IPAT, ITS-Academic Technologies, ITS-Campus Services, Office of Affirmative
Action, Faculty/Staff Disabilities Services, Student Disabilities Services,
Center for Disabilities & Development (CDD), University Relations, College
of Law, College of Liberal Arts, University Libraries.
Evaluated software tools. Recommended LIFT software, Dec 01 – Jan 02.
Reviewed commercially available software to assist web page developers in building
accessible web sites. Demonstrated LIFT Software to Campus Webmasters.
Updated templates/style sheets to meet 508 guidelines, Dec 01 – Jan 02.
ITS-Academic Technologies provides several templates to faculty for creating
web pages. These templates are now 508 compliant. Group decided not to pursue
templates further because they do little to help designers adhere to standards.
The user of a template can’t actually “see” the added features
that ensure compliance. Templates turn out to be not a good learning tool.
Presentation to Campus IT Leaders, Jan 02.
Updated the Campus IT Leaders on the purpose and work of the committee. Asked
them to complete a survey collecting information on the volume of web publishing-related
activities in their colleges.
Sponsored booth at campus New Media Day, Iowa Memorial Union, 28 Feb 02.
Assistive Technology and Universal Design Teleconference, 11 Mar 02.
University of Vermont Continuing Education. Sponsored locally by ICATER, Office
of Affirmative Action and CDD.
Developed recommendations for a Universal Web Access Policy, Mar – Apr
02 .
