Wireless Networking Menu

Access Requirements

ITS/TNS is installing and supporting wireless Access Points (Cisco 350 and 1200 series).

In order for you to use this wireless network, you must:

  1. have a valid Hawk ID
  2. have a laptop running Windows 2000, Windows XP, Macintosh OS 9, or Macintosh OS X
  3. have a Cisco Aironet 352 PCMCIA wireless card or an Apple Airport version 2 card (these cards are available through the Bookstore in the Iowa Memorial Union and many common mail order catalogues) or an Intel Centrino-certified laptop (example: Gateway 450e laptop).
  4. have your laptop configured to authenticate using the Cisco LEAP method

The ITS Help Desk provides configuration assistance. Any problems should be reported first to the ITS Help Desk. They will either help resolve the problem or determine who can resolve it.

ITS Wireless Model

In developing a wireless networking implementation, ITS/TNS used the following guiding principles:

  1. wireless is a complement to the wired networks, not a replacement
  2. wireless should be treated as an extension of the existing wired data network
  3. authentication to the wireless network is required
  4. 802.11 standard-based WEP key security is not adequate
  5. security measures can (and should be) engaged upfront
  6. a wireless service must be consistent across campus
  7. wireless problems must have minimal negative impact on the campus network

Based on these principles and experienced gained through a pilot project, ITS/TNS is currently deploying wireless networking following the IEEE 802.11b standard and vendor interpretations of the IEEE 802.1x standard (specifically, Cisco's LEAP). Hawk IDs are being authenticated through Active Directory.

IP is the only network layer protocol (Layer 3) allowed on the wireless network. AppleTalk and IPX services are not available. Wireless services are provided on a separate logical network from building services, thus protecting the wired infrastructure from most potential problems on the wireless network.
