Campus Video System
Digital Television Service

Campus Video Systems now offer digital and high definition cable television services. Please note that these stations do not broadcast all the time in high definition, many of the programs are still presented in standard definition. Your tuner is working if you see the channel. Your TV set will convert from SD to HD when it detects high definition. Also, your set may not assign the exact same channel numbers we have listed here.  Special note on digital channel 62...

CHANNELS:

34.1 TBS Digital
34.2 Comcast Sports Digital

REQUIREMENTS:

No set top box required! Most users only need to plug your cable directly to the digital TV set. However, you will need to have a digital high definition television set with a "QAM" demodulator/tuner.  Most HDTV sets sold in the past few months already have a QAM tuner installed. Older sets will require a tuner box. You can get specifications and recommendations on a QAM tuner by calling 319-335-5898.

Tuners and demodulators will not be provided by ITS Video Services. Customers wishing to watch HDTV will need to buy the equipment.  You cannot watch the digital HDTV programming on an analog standard definition television set. If you use an analog television, you will not see any of the digital channels. The government converter box will not work on the cable system (it is only for over-the-air television).

NOTES:

Campus Video Services are only available on The University of Iowa campus to University colleges, department, faculty, staff and students.

The terms "Digital" and "High Definition" sometimes can be confusing.

  • "Digital" is any TV signal that is transmitted in a digitized format (ones and zeros). This can be broadcast TV, cable TV or even iPod video. It can be Standard Definition (480i60) or High Definition (1080i60 or 720p30), or even lower quality video like iTunes or YouTube (high compression).

  • "High Definition" refers to video that is 1280x720 (720 progressive) or 1920x1080 (1080 interlace).  HD is also a 16x9 aspect ratio (wider screen) than standard definition, which is 4x3 aspect ratio.

  • Broadcast signals are not sent at 1080 progressive (1080p), despite the fact that you see this as a specification on many new TV sets. A computer display can take advantage of 1080p.
  • In 2009, broadcast television stations ceased analog broadcasts. However, campus video will continue to offer analog television service. If you do not have a digital TV and still use an analog TV, you will still see all the analog channels on your TV without a cable box. This is being offered on a limited basis, as complete conversion to digital (requiring a new TV or converter box) will be done in the next two years.

Special note on digital channel 62...

There is a radio transmitter at the hospital that interferes with digital channels 62.1 and 62.2. on the cable. If you notice this interference, these channels are also available on 64.1 and 64.2. Be sure to AUTO SCAN your digital TV set to see these channels.
