Satellite Uplink Service Booking, scheduling and technical information:
DIGITAL SERVICE IS HERE!
Purpose With more than 20 years of broadcast experience, the staff at satellite uplink services transmits a video program originating from The University of Iowa via satellite to one or more sites across the continent and beyond. The service is used by departments and units within the University for the origination of seminars and conferences. The service is also requested by local and national news agencies (like CNN) and sports services (like ESPN). Uplinked programs can be augmented with telephone or email service for interaction with the viewers. The uplink service is fully redundant (dual-thread, multi-path fiber and diesel generator power) to reduce the chance of transmission failure. Requirements Receiving sites must be able to accept a
C-band analog NTSC or digital signal. The satellites typically used cover the continental
US, Canada, and Mexico. Hawaii and other locations are possible by using
intercontinental satellite relay.
Pre-recorded programs can be broadcast from many sources, including tape. We can also accommodate your equipment to accept other sources, such as Beta-format tape. We require composite video output with 600 ohm line-level audio. Costs The cost to uplink a program depends on many factors. Please contact Video Services for an estimate. There is no charge from Video Services to receiving sites. However, receiving sites may have charges from their downlink service provider. Costs can be broken down into three parts:
Program Origination – You will need a video crew to produce your program and send the signal to Video Services for uplinking. Talk with Video Services about crew options. Getting the signal to Video Services will only be an issue if the origination site does not already have a connection to the campus cable. If your program is pre-recorded, then all you need to do is provide Video Services with a copy of the program. Dish Usage – Video Services maintains and operates the dish which sends the program signal from campus to satellite transponders. Transponder – Satellite costs depend on when and where you want to send your program. For example, it is less expensive to send programs to sites in the continental US than to Hawaii. Also, there are different satellite services and brokers of satellite services. Costs can vary among providers. For ballpark estimating for uplinks to sites in North America, assume about $100 for each 15 minutes of satellite time. Contact us; we can likely save you money in booking satellite time. Contact Us We prefer at least a two-business-day notice to prepare for an uplink. However, we can usually respond in less than a day. Call 319.335.5898 or send email to its-video@uiowa.edu. Call and choose option #2 if this is less than 24 hours notice. (E-mail may not respond quick enough.) Let us know:

Satellite Downlink Service Purpose
The downlink service acquires via satellite a program originating from some other location and sends the program to any campus location with a campus cable connection, such as an ICN classroom. We regularly downlink presentations for various campus audiences from a variety of providers, such as the Center for Disease Control, NASA, and Apple Computer. Requirements We can handle C-band downlinks ONLY, we do not offer KU-band. We are limited to receiving analog NTSC signals. Multiple downlinks can be managed simultaneously. Video Services is not responsible for campus viewing rooms, only the delivery of the signal to the room. You need to make arrangements with the University unit in charge of the room you want to use and for use of the viewing equipment in the room. Likewise, you will need to make arrangements for telephone service in the room if necessary for talking with the program origination site. Costs Video Services expenses for receiving a downlink are paid by the requesting University unit. Prices depend on program length and time. Please call for rates. Contact Us Contact us if you receive notice about a teleconference or program that you would like to receive as a downlink. Like uplinks, we prefer at least a two-business-day notice to prepare for a downlink. Call 319.335.5898 or send email to its-video@uiowa.edu. Let us know:
