Production

Programming on UITV can be live or tape delay. For live productions, a UITV crew takes equipment to various locations around campus that have cable feeds back to the UITV control room. Major event locations, such as Hancher, Carver Hawkeye Arena, and Studio 150 in North Lindquist Center are “cable ready.” If you have an event that you’d like broadcast live over UITV, be sure to contact us about event location.

Most UITV production is done on location. Recording the homecoming parade for rebroadcast on UITV.

For tape-delay programming, UITV can take the original program from VHS, miniDV, or DV sources. Simple program editing (such as adding titles or deleting pre-program recording) can be easily done. UITV staff can provide additional program editing support (such as combining multiple sources), but may charge for this service depending on the amount of labor required.

Video is edited using Apple Final Cut Pro or using Adobe Premiere non-linear editing software.

Studio 150 in North Lindquist is available for live or taped programs. The facility is co-managed with the College of Education. This location is ideal for interviews and panel discussions. Three Hitachi digital cameras can provide a variety of program shots. Be sure to contact UITV as far in advance as possible to reserve the studio.

A variety of sets are available in Studio 150. Here a crew sets up for a recording of "Iowa Desk & Couch" on the main set.

A musical guest is recording on the second stage of Studio 150.

Broadcast

UITV programming is broadcast from our master control room in south Lindquist Center. We can route programming from many different sources (such as live from Studio 150, live from various locations around campus, from VHS tape, and from DV tape) for broadcast on UITV. The UITV signal is distributed from master control to the campus video system and to Mediacom Cable, South Slope Cable and McLeod Cable for redistribution to community franchises in surrounding communities.

Signals from a remote feed at monitored at Lindquist Video Master Control center.

The UITV signal leaves Master Control via microwave WHR685, commercial cable, and campus cable.
