Phone System Features
Following is a list of features available on the University phone system. These
features are not all accessed in the same manner; refer to the User's Guide for
your specific phone type.
HOLD allows user to place caller on hold.
TRANSFER allows user to transfer established calls to another
on-campus telephone without operator assistance.
CONFERENCE CALL (CONF) allows three-way conversation. At least one
party must be on the University system; other two can be campus, local, or long
distance. Any party can initiate call. For conference calls involving more than
three parties, call a conference operator.
CALL BACK allows University telephone to automatically call back
another University phone when both telephones are idle.
DND ("do not disturb") restricts incoming calls; outside
callers hear fast busy signal. Function set by individual station user. Does not
prevent station user from originating call.
HOOK SWITCH, released when the handset is lifted, connects telephone
to telephone line.
MESSAGE WAITING INDICATOR displays VMM on the LED of the telephone,
alerting user that voice mail message awaits pickup. Goes off when voice mail
messages are picked up.
MESSAGE WAITING LIGHT alerts user that voice mail message awaits
pickup. Goes off when message is picked up.
MIC (MICROPHONE) controls built-in microphone that allows hands-free
answering of voice calls.
RECALL allows user to terminate established call and receive new dial
tone without hanging up handset.
RINGER SWITCH CONTROL sets volume of ringer for incoming calls. There
are three different audible volumes to choose from.
SPEAKER turns telephone speaker on and off.
SPEED DIAL MEMORY BUTTONS allow automatic (single-button) dialing of
frequently used numbers. Depending upon phone type, maximum of 15 to 24 digits
can be stored in one memory button. Features such as call forwarding and call
park can be programmed into speed dial memory buttons, and can be reprogrammed
at any time. (Note: Programming confidential numbers, such as calling card
numbers, into speed dial button is not recommended.)
SPEAKER VOLUME CONTROL sets loudness of conversation when in speaker
phone mode.
SUBLINE/FUNCTION KEYS allow programming of system features, other
numbers in department, and virtual lines. First button on top row is prime line
that is seized when receiver is picked up. When phone is in use and/or ringing,
red light winks. Buttons 2 through 16 need to be depressed to either answer
another line in department or to use system features. Buttons can ring or flash.
Rows of line/function keys located below display must be programmed by
telecommunications switch technicians.
