One of the most commonly reported problems is static on the line. This is
also one of the most difficult situations to resolve because of the many places
where trouble can occur. On an outgoing long distance call, for example, the
problem could be with the University system, the long distance carrier, the
local phone company at the call's destination, or the extension called. You can
help us track a problem by calling our repair desk immediately after completing
a call characterized by static. Give as much information as possible, such as
whether the call was incoming or outgoing, whether it was local or
long-distance, the number at other end, the University extension number
involved, and the date and time.
Other common problems are listed below. Often customers can save time,
trouble, and expense by doing a little trouble shooting before they call the
Repair Desk.
Problem: No Dial Tone
- Are all cords plugged in tight?
- Is the gray line cord plugged into the proper portion of the jack? It may
be necessary to try all openings to get a dial tone. Is the connection
secure? Unplug the line cord from the back of the phone and plug it back in.
This acts as a reset.
- Is line 1 or line 2 depressed?
Problem: Phone Rings 1/2 Ring - Dead Air When Answered
- Is Call Forward All Calls set? To cancel, get a dial tone, depress #7, and
hang up.
Problem: Telephone Doesn't Ring
- Is the ringer control on the side of the phone turned too low?
- Is Do Not Disturb set? (Applies to Dterm 5 Series I only.)
- Is Call Forward All Calls set?
Problem: Call Back Doesn't Work
- Do you already have a Call Back set from your telephone? Could there be a
Call Back set against the other telephone? There can only be one Call Back
set from or against an extension at any one time.
- Is the phone set on TONE? All system features require that it be set on
TONE, not PULSE. (Applies to Single-Line Feature phones only.)
Problem: Speed Dials Don't Work
- Have the batteries been changed lately? They should be changed at least
once a year. (Applies to Single-Line Feature phones only.)
- Have you tried to reprogram speed dials to see if you may have lost them?
- Is the phone set on TONE? All system features require that it be set on
TONE, not PULSE. (Applies to Single-Line Feature phones only.)
